Film Storage: What You Need to Know
So, you are going through some old stuff and you come across these old movie reels. You know they are priceless, but you don’t know what to do with them. Whether it be 8mm, Super 8, 16mm reels and slides need to be stored properly so that when the time comes to retrieve the information on them, it can be done so quite easily.
Luckily, if stored properly those old movie reels can last longer than a lifetime. Hollywood STILL has some original films that are over 100 years of age because they know how to preserve them.
Keeping your slides and film in a climate controlled environment is key to keeping the film in tip-top shape. Things can be quite messy if they get stuck in the attic (especially with Texas summers). A lot of the time the heat and cold fluctuations can cause the reels to become frail causing irreparable damage. They will break apart and whatever is on them is gone forever.
While temperature is a key credential to keeping your film safe, it is also important to find a proper storing place. We recommend placing it away from chemicals or anything toxic, such as paint or varnish. The last thing you would want to happen would be to have a chemical to get on those reels, corroding the film itself.
